AEP OHIO OFFERS EMOTOR REWIND PILOT, A NEW ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM

March 26, 2015

GAHANNA, Ohio, March 26, 2015 – AEP Ohio, a unit of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP), in partnership with Advanced Energy, has launched a new energy efficiency program for electric motor rewinds.

The Emotor Rewind Pilot Program promotes energy efficient rewinds for small to large companies in the industrial/manufacturing sector and provides incentives to customers and motor service centers. The program covers three-phase induction motors rated from 300 to 5,000 horsepower (HP). This program can eliminate 0.5 to 2 percent efficiency loss for a typical rewind. This can equate to an annual energy savings of 5,900 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 116,000 kWh, depending on the motor size. An efficient motor rewind also provides for cooler operation of the motor resulting in a longer motor life.

AEP Ohio customers located in Ohio will receive $2 per HP and certified motor service centers will receive $1 per HP.

“According to the U.S. Department of Energy, over half of all electrical energy consumed in the United States is used by electric motors,” said Richard Sullivan, PE CEM CEP, principle coordinator for AEP Ohio’s Custom Energy Efficiency Program. “We saw the opportunity to help the manufacturing/industrial sector reduce inefficient energy consumption as well as its carbon footprint.”

The first two companies to receive Emotor Rewind Pilot Program certification are Hannon Electric Company (Canton, Ohio) and Electric Motor & Service Company (Zanesville, Ohio). Motor service centers must be certified by Advanced Energy.

“Quality motor repair offers opportunities for significant energy savings and reliability benefits,” said Kitt Butler, senior program manager, motors and drives, Advanced Energy.  “Having a utility like AEP Ohio recognize and reward quality motor repair is a giant step in the right direction.  We are very pleased to be a part of that.”
