AEP Foundation Grants $100,000 to Jackson R. Lehman Family YMCA

FORT WAYNE, Ind., November 6, 2017 – Indiana Michigan Power, on behalf of the AEP Foundation, awarded  a $100,000 grant to the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne on Monday toward construction costs for the new Jackson R. Lehman Family YMCA which serves communities on the northeast side of Fort Wayne.

Dave Lucas, I&M Vice President Finance and Customer Experience, presented the $100,000 check to Marty Pastura, President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne.

“We are so grateful for this gift, which recognizes the value of the ongoing work that the YMCA does with the special needs population. We continue to grow these types of programs in order to continue to fulfill our mission which makes the Y available to all”, said Marty Pastura, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne. “The quality of life for everyone in our community is important, and we appreciate the AEP Foundation for helping us make that a reality for people with diverse abilities.”

I&M’s Lucas said the grant helps achieve goals of both I&M and the AEP Foundation to help meet community needs in the areas of basic human services, education and quality of life.

“I&M values the YMCA’s contributions to our community,” Lucas said. “This new facility not only brings the resources of the YMCA to another area of Fort Wayne, but it also helps serve residents with special needs, provides educational opportunities, offers access to lower-income residents and helps to build overall wellness for its patrons.”

In addition to the traditional amenities that a full-service Y offers, this Y features a warm water therapy pool and a 6-lane 25-yard lap pool, which are both accessible by zero depth entry ramps. This location hosts an office for physical therapy provided by Parkview Therapy One. The facility layout also includes adaptive equipment, a sensory room and family changing rooms which provide recreational and social opportunities for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities that may not be able to participate in traditional community health, wellness and sporting activities.

In recognition of the grant, The Youth Room will be named after the AEP Foundation in recognition of their contribution to the Jackson R. Lehman Family YMCA and the youth who use its facilities and services.

The AEP Foundation is funded by American Electric Power and its utility operating units, including Indiana Michigan Power. The Foundation focuses on improving lives through education from early childhood through higher education in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math and the environment and by meeting basic needs for emergency shelter, affordable housing and the elimination of hunger.
