I&M to Begin Construction on Underground Power Line in Muncie

February 29, 2024

MUNCIE, Ind., Feb. 29, 2024 – Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) representatives plan to start construction next week to rebuild an aging underground power line along Tillotson Avenue in Muncie.

I&M will rebuild the 1-mile underground power line. Contract crews plan to work along Tillotson Avenue between University Avenue and York Prairie Creek, just south of Euclid Avenue. I&M right-of-way representatives work with affected landowners and residents where the line rebuilding requires private property easements. Typical work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

Those travelling by the work zone can expect:

  • Overnight and daytime lane closures, reduced lane widths and sidewalk detours along Tillotson Avenue.
  • Detours of intersecting streets when work occurs at intersections.
  • Temporary steel plates and asphalt patches on the road.
  • Safety signage and flaggers to aid traffic flow.

Crews expect to complete this work by late summer, weather permitting.

I&M understands this work may cause some traffic delays. We are working closely with the City of Muncie to keep you moving safely and expediently past our construction zone. We appreciate the patience of our Muncie customers as I&M works to improve the reliability of energy service in the Muncie area.

These upgrades are part of the Tillotson Avenue Transmission Line Project. The project includes upgrading 4 miles of above- and below-ground power lines in northwest Muncie to address the numerous extended power outages to area customers in recent years. Modernizing aging power poles and wires reduces the likelihood future outages and improves the area’s electric reliability.

Contract crews are expected to start construction on additional project upgrades this summer. I&M representatives plan to keep the community updated on construction progress throughout the project.
