With levelized billing, each month your electricity costs will be billed in equal installments, making your monthly charges more predictable.
Under this billing structure, a scheduled annual monthly payment amount adjustment, along with an annual reconciliation, will make the necessary adjustments to your monthly charge based on your monthly average energy usage. Through the reconciliation, you will also be credited for unused electricity or charged for any excess usage. The reconciliation ensures every customer's bill is reflective of their usage.
Beginning this July, Indiana state law requires that eligible residential customers who have applied for assistance through the state's Home Energy Assistance Program be automatically enrolled in levelized billing. Indiana customers who utilize I&M's Equal Payment Plan (EPP) will also be automatically enrolled.
To comply with state law, I&M will automatically enroll in levelized billing Indiana residential customers who qualified for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Indiana customers utilizing Equal Payment Plan (EPP) will be automatically enrolled since the EPP program's framework will be adapted to that of levelized billing.
You have the option to opt out of levelized billing if you choose. If you do not wish to be enrolled in levelized billing, we ask that you please complete and return the opt out form included in the mailing sent to your service address. You can also access a copy of this form for submission in the email sent to your provided address (if applicable) or use the digital opt-out form.
Once you are enrolled in levelized billing, you still have the option to discontinue your participation without any penalty.
Right now, levelized billing is an option for Indiana customers to comply with Indiana state law. Michigan customers can access rate options and payment assistance information for state-specific choices best suited for them.
Once we automatically enroll our Indiana customers who qualify for levelized billing as determined by state law, we will determine eligibility criteria requirements for all other customers. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
If you have an outstanding balance with I&M at the time you are enrolled in levelized billing, that outstanding balance will be reflected on the bill on the deferred line. Any additional payments or bill credits that occur throughout the year will be applied to that deferred amount and any outstanding balance will come due at the time of annual reconciliation.
