Five middle school girls stood amazed by the expansive views from windows at the Indiana Michigan Power Center. The students, who were visiting as part of the Women’s Fund of Greater Fort Wayne’s Take a Girl to Work Day, were able to learn from female leaders at I&M and ask questions about their professional experience. With an array of career options available, the day’s theme focused on potential for these girls, and the several others attending, was endless. 

The April 9 event offered opportunity for girls in sixth grade at East Allen County Schools, Fort Wayne Community Schools, Northwest Allen County Schools and Southwest Allen County Schools to connect with women in leadership positions at nearly 30 workplaces throughout the city. Students and businesses were able to connect over lunch at the Grand Wayne Center and listen to local women speak on the concept of endless potential.

While at I&M, the girls learned about the importance of energy efficiency; how appropriate communication, both internal and external, is impactful; what economic development is; and what goes into problem solving during crisis situations. They also “meet” one of the famous peregrine falcons, perched on the window ledge during their tour.

When asked about their favorite part of the day, the views surrounding every floor were quick to be named. Professionally, they focused on the variations across departments, and how despite each employee holding different responsibilities, there was overlap needed to serve the community. 

American Electric Power (AEP), the parent company of I&M, was previously named in Forbes Magazine’s America’s Best Employers for Women 2023 list, marking the fourth consecutive year for the honor.
