Keeping the lights on sometimes means staying one step ahead of some unexpected troublemakers.
I&M has reduced the time customers were without power due to animal-caused outages by more than 65% thanks to studying data, tree trimming and using special deterrent equipment.
Most people don't think about squirrels when they think about their power, but these curious critters, along with raccoons, mice, skunks and even snakes, can cause unexpected outages. That's why preventing animal-related outages is an important part of the work happening behind the scenes.
“Our goal is to prevent as many interruptions as we can before they affect customers,” said Subin Mathew, managing director of Distribution Operations. “By looking at where animal-related outages have occurred and identifying patterns in the data, we can better target preventive measures and strengthen reliability in those areas.”
Those proactive efforts are making a difference. From 2020 to 2025, we reduced the time customers were without power due to animal-caused outages by more than 65%.
So how do we outsmart some of nature's most determined climbers and chewers?
- Tree trimming: Keeping tree branches away from power lines helps prevent animals from using them as a walkway to electrical equipment.
- Pole wraps: Durable sleeves installed on poles make it more difficult for squirrels and other animals to climb.
- Protective covers and insulation: Special covers help keep animals away from important electrical equipment and connections.
- Line guards: These devices help prevent animals from reaching critical equipment by making it difficult to cross power lines.
- Bird deterrent lasers: Green-light technology helps discourage birds from nesting or gathering near equipment.
While we're constantly working behind the scenes to strengthen reliability, customers can help, too.
If you notice damaged equipment, a tree growing into power lines, a leaning pole, a dim streetlight or any other situation that looks unsafe, please let us know. A quick report can help our crews address potential problems before they cause an outage for you or your neighbors. You can report hazards here or call our 24/7 Customer Solutions Center at 1-800-311-4634.
Preventing outages takes a combination of technology, proactive maintenance and community awareness. From installing smart technology that alerts us when outages occur to replacing aging equipment, trimming trees and staying one step ahead of curious critters, these efforts are making a difference. In fact, customer outages have decreased by nearly 50% over the past five years.
