Mentorships that SPARK Possibilities for the Future

February 16, 2024

Imagine, young students having a clear picture of their future career. Through hands-on educational experiences, interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) principles is fueling an intense passion for several students. Now imagine those same opportunities without barriers and accessible for youths at any age. Through partnerships with local organizations, like a power company, that is now possible.

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), along with the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation, is working with local organizations to make exposure to STEM education possible. By leading hands-on programs, our team is providing equal means for youth to be exposed to career possibilities earlier. These foundations offer students support and provide direction for the future through mentorships and other program opportunities.

One of these opportunities, with the Elkhart Education Foundation (EEF), is “sparking” interest with students on a STEM-focused future.

I&M line workers from the South Bend/Elkhart District visit with students and highlight the profession with hands-on demonstrations. This opportunity is part of the EEF’s Spark Program, which connects students with local businesses to engage in career possibilities. And for this group, they are benefiting from early exposure to what a STEM-focused career could look like.

What may seem like an opportunity to learn a new skill is actually an exclusive, front-row perspective to how STEM-education can impact the future – from elementary to high school and beyond. This true opportunity for all further supports the vision EEF has for education in the community, believing all students can discover their “spark” enroute to college and career readiness.

I&M supports making education possible for students in grades pre-k and beyond, especially through STEM-focused programs that hold promise of future innovations. Working alongside the AEP Foundation, organizations like the Urban League of Fort Wayne, local Boys and Girls Clubs, Junior Achievement and area schools have received support to fuel success for students now and in the future.
