Drive for Community Behind Passion for Volunteering

April 5, 2024

Volunteers hold a unique reason for the work they do and the organizations they dedicate their time to. Some would say it is the people they are serving, and others may enjoy the nature of the projects they are involved with. For some, like I&M’s Joseph Taylor, it is simply his love for giving back to his community that fuels his passion.

What organizations do you volunteer with?

I volunteer currently with the Benton Charter Township Planning Commission, Benton Charter Township Housing Commission, Benton Harbor area schools as a 4-H coordinator and as a board member for the Berrien County Sewage Appeals. I have also volunteered my time on the Benton Harbor Area School Board and was a past president of the Benton Harbor Sunrise Rotary Club. Most recently,  I did the Berg Back to School Drive in Benton Harbor, which was a first for Michigan.

How long have you done volunteer work?

Around 29 years.

What have been some of your responsibilities in these volunteer roles?

In my role as a 4H leader, I help to create a safe environment for members, provide opportunities for youth to build skills, help to foster an inclusive environment and highlight how youth can practice service for others. As a board member for the Berrien County Sewage Appeals, I help decide to approve or disapprove the health department denial of consumer application for septic system. With the Benton Charter Township Planning Commission, I help plan, review an act on matters related to planning and development. I also partner with the Benton Charter Township Housing Commission and its executive director and local officials. Through their leadership, commissioners enable the housing agency to fulfil its mission of providing affordable, safe and sanitary housing in a sustainable, thriving community.

What drives you to volunteer your time in the community and why would you encourage others to do so too?

I love giving back to my community. Those who don’t volunteer currently or are interested into getting involved, they will find a fulfillment with act of kindness and compassion, without any personal gains.
