Think back to previous school experiences – what stands out? For many, the opportunity to take a school field trip would rank high. Utilizing hands-on learning in spaces other than a classroom can fuel students throughout their academic, and professional, journeys.
The barrier? Larger class sizes, coordinating transportation and other associated costs have often pushed these ventures out of reach for today’s students – until now.
The South Bend Alumni Association (SBAA) aspires to support education within the South Bend School Corporation by offering funding for extra-curricular activities and instilling an awareness of needs for student service in the community. Last school year, they impacted over 8,000 students and their families through their mission. And now, with a partnership from Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) and the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation, that number is set to grow in the future.
Through the AEP Foundation Elementary Field Trip Fund, learning experiences will now be more accessible. Students will benefit from immersive trips and gain exposure to new people and ideas, something a textbook alone cannot provide. SBAA further supports how field trips can open impressionable young minds, foster curiosity and problem solving and provide platforms for future passions.
“Financial assistance for field trips can often be restricted for schools, so with this fund, we hope to make these experiences more equitable, accessible and meaningful for students,” said Mona Livingston, I&M External Affairs manager. “We look forward to witnessing how opportunities like these can impact students now and in years to come.”
