Help in the Night: Stores Attendant Discovers Decatur Crash Scene

October 23, 2023

On a chilly October night, Jason Durnell, Stores attendant at the Ardmore Transmission Service Center, was called into work. Being called in the middle of the night for an emergency repair itself was very unusual for Durnell. He would later find out he would respond to a life-saving emergency.

While driving into work on U.S. 27 near Decatur, Ind., something caught Durnell’s eye.

“I drove by something with a flashing light at the top of an embankment right at the edge of a cornfield,” Durnell said. “I discovered it was a truck that crashed and was resting on its side.”

Durnell quickly turned around and called 911. After further looking at the crash site, he soon made another startling find.

“There was a person lying motionless on the ground near the edge of the pavement – quite a way from the rolled truck. I immediately let the 911 dispatcher know there was a victim on scene and an ambulance was needed as soon as possible,” Durnell said.

In order to stay safe and highlight the area for incoming first responders, Durnell put on his bright-colored safety vest and stood next to the victim until first responders arrived.

According to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, a teenager was driving the truck when it left the road for an unknown reason. Deputies determine the truck drove through a steep embankment, into a cornfield becoming airborne and flipping before resting on its side.

“The teenager crawled out the truck and was on the side of a ditch, where he was found,” Adams County Sheriff Dan Mawhorr said. “Your employee did an outstanding job reporting this scene and staying on site with the teenager until first responders arrived.”

For Durnell, he was just in the right place at the right time.

“We’re taught to have a questioning attitude and ‘see something, say something, do something.’ Those practices caused me to turn around to the crash scene,” Durnell said. “If I hadn’t been called after midnight that night, I may not have had the chance to help the teenager.”
