Smarter, Faster and More Reliable

February 27, 2023

I&M’s reliability continues to improve at a remarkable rate. In fact, our reliability metrics improved by around 10% from 2021 to 2022. Part of the success is utilizing the smart grid. But what exactly makes a grid smart?

In simple terms, a smart grid can detect problems and reduce outages using innovative technology.  For example, if the power goes out, a smart meter will send an alert to our Dispatch Center notifying them of an outage. If a power line is damaged, a sensor can detect loss of power. And with the introduction of self-healing technology, known as Distribution Automation Circuit Reconfiguration (DACR), there is potential to reconfigure circuits when part of circuit is damaged.

“Self-healing technology is really a wonderful thing,” said Dave Isaacson, vice president distribution. “When bad weather hits or an accident occurs, we will still head out to fix the damage. However, with DACR, many of our customers won’t be in the dark while we’re working. Keeping the lights on isn’t just our job, it’s our passion, and this technology is an important tool in that endeavor.”

DACR works by tying multiple circuits together with switches that can automatically open and close. That means if a power line is damaged, the nearby switch can open, breaking the circuit to isolate the problem. Switches connecting to alternate feeds will then close to create a new pathway for energy to flow. This can, within moments, restore power by redirecting the energy supply to another circuit or substation.

In 2022, I&M installed DACR on 23 circuits. To-date we have 60 circuits with self-healing technology, serving more than 64,000 customers. That’s more than 10% of our total customer base. Deploying more technology on the energy grid benefits customers through improved reliability, better service, and greater control over your energy use.

“At I&M, we’re committed to improving reliability for all the customers we serve,” said Isaacson. “Investing in smart technology and modernizing the energy grid is just one way we’re working to provide better service for you.”
