Build the Right Emergency Kit

June 15, 2026

Storms, flooding, high winds and tornadoes can quickly create dangerous conditions. Taking steps now to prepare, rather than waiting until severe weather is approaching, can help protect your family when it matters most. The key to staying safe is to be prepared before the weather strikes.

While we cannot control the weather, we can be  prepared  for these emergency situations. Whether you’re in your vehicle, or  at  home, it’s a good idea to have an emergency kit ready.

Think about what your household needs and build your emergency kit around those items. Here’s how to get started:

  • Battery-powered radio
  • Blankets and/or towels
  • Copies of important documents (driver’s license, social security card, health insurance card, etc.)
  • First-aid kit
  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • Hygiene items
  • Infant needs (diapers, bottles, formula)
  • Medications and other necessary medical items
  • Nonperishable food items
  • Pet supplies (food, water, leash, nametag)
  • Portable chargers
  • Water

Keep your kit ready for severe weather with storing in an easy to reach area or in your home’s safe spot.
