I&M is announcing that disconnects due to non-payment have been suspended until Friday, January30. That date may be extended if needed. This is in line with our standard procedures during periods of extreme weather that can affect the health and safety of our customers.
Over the weekend, many of us experienced extremely cold temperatures and heavy snowfall. As we begin the week, single digit temperatures and negative windchills are forecasted to stick around for the next several days. Stay safe and “weather-smart” at home and in your daily commute.
When we think of typical cold in the winter months, we may think of temperatures in the 20s or teens, but as we see more extreme temperatures, which drop below zero, different actions are needed to keep comfortable and stay safe.
- Drop your thermostat a few degrees before leaving for the day, such as for work or school
- When you are home, keep your thermostat set at a consistent temperature
- Place rolled towels at the bottom of exterior facing doors to prevent drafty cold air from coming in
- Leave your ceiling fan running clockwise on a low setting to push additional warm air down into your space
- Skip the space heater: running a 1500-watt unit for 8 hours a day can add over $60 a month to your energy bill
- Keep curtains or blinds closed during the night to keep heat inside
Stay Safe and Informed
I&M employees are prepared to respond as safely and quickly as weather conditions allow, should there be any outages. Crews have strengthened the local electrical system ahead of winter weather by installing smart technology, upgrading equipment and proactively trimming trees. Due to these efforts, I&M has cut customer outages by nearly 50% over the last five years.

- Bring pets inside during extreme cold
- Before leaving home, ensure you have a stocked emergency kit in your vehicle
- With many roads covered in multiple inches of snow, take it slow and increase your following distance
- If you need to use a generator, read through the safety manual before beginning and always plan to keep it outdoors while running
