Extremely cold temperatures and snow are in the forecast Stay warm, save energy

Prepare Now for Extreme Cold Temperatures and Snowfall

January 22, 2026

The forecast for this weekend will include temperatures in single digits, windchills well below zero and the potential for additional snowfall. When we think of typical cold in the winter months, we may think of temperatures in the 20s or teens, but as we see more extreme temperatures, which drop below zero, different actions are needed to keep comfortable and stay safe.

With extreme temperatures coming over the weekend, and forecasted dry snow, you may be spending more time at home as cold, winter weather begins. Stay safe and “weather-smart” while indoors by:

  • Keeping your thermostat set at a consistent temperature
  • Grabbing additional layers, like a sweatshirt or sweater, and using a blanket to provide warmth without cranking up the heat
  • Placing rolled towels at the bottom of exterior facing doors to prevent drafty cold air from coming into your space – and making your system work harder
  • Clearing vents of furniture or other items so air can efficiently heat your space
  • Skipping the space heater: running a 1500-watt unit for 8 hours a day can add over $60 a month to your energy bill

Stay Safe and Prepared

  • Bring pets inside during extreme cold
  • Be on the lookout for ice forming on sidewalks, driveways and parking lots
  • If you must be on the roads, ensure you have a stocked emergency kit in your vehicle
