I&M Volunteers Take to the Zoo

August 26, 2025

The volunteer work we do in the community is deeply meaningful to our team who get the job done. Whether raking leaves, packing meals or teaching young students about linework, we look to make an impact for our neighbors well beyond just one day of serving.

For over 30 years, volunteers from local organizations have participated in the United Way of Allen County’s Day of Caring. Our robust team of volunteers were excited to return to our 2024 Day of Caring project site, which included some “wild” supervisors to ensure the jobs were done right.

Partnering with the Fort Wayne Zoo for a second year, our “down and dirty” team kept busy with vegetation removal, gravel laying and mulching projects throughout the zoo. Another I&M group took on more of a unique project, especially for a day that featured plentiful sunshine and heat. To prepare the zoo for the upcoming holiday season, volunteers spent the day wrapping the many trees throughout the Central Zoo area with holiday lights. In total, over 50 members of our team volunteered as part of the Day of Caring.

“We value our partnership with the Allen County United Way and are honored to support their efforts to positively influence the lives of countless individuals and families throughout our community,” said Kelly Rentschler, I&M External Affairs Manager. “Through partnerships and volunteer opportunities, like the Day of Caring, we can demonstrate how our employees regularly give back to the same communities we call home.”

In addition to a team of volunteers, I&M also served as this year’s Platinum Paintbrush sponsor for the Day of Caring event. At its completion, more than 1,400 volunteers dedicated their time to assisting the community through over 60 different projects throughout Allen County. The day’s work benefited local nonprofit agencies, organizations, schools and more.
