Growing Communities by Educating Leaders

June 6, 2025

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is invested in a brighter tomorrow. By equipping professionals, especially in the economic development field, with appropriate resources, our growing communities can continue to thrive. To do this, economic development leaders offered insight through various sessions at a week-long course organized by Ball State University. Upon completion of the course, attendees can apply their evolved understanding of economic development principles into their daily roles.

In 1986, Ball State offered its first accredited Indiana Economic Development Course. Now in its 40th year, the week-long opportunity offers training in basic concepts and strategies of economic, industrial, business, workforce and community development. Those completing the course join the ranks of over 2,200 alumni who serve their communities, counties and states as economic development officials, community developers, consultants and elected officials.

Participants attended several sessions through the week, including one presented by Ashley Savieo, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) director of economic and business development. The session on strategic planning is one she has taught for the last eight years, and this year partnered with Jacob Everett to present on this topic.

“Our team takes pride in the work we do and watching the communities we call home not just grow but thrive,” Savieo said. “Strategic planning is an important component to making lasting changes but most importantly, we strive to provide local professionals with the resources to make a significant impact now and into the future.”

I&M’s Economic and Business Development team works alongside local, regional and state organizations to understand the unique needs of businesses and how meeting those needs can impact communities. Their work also includes investing in professional development by educating community leaders to be better stewards of resources and develop creative business tools.
