Electric Generating Equipment Considerations

Considering the installation of electric generating equipment? Indiana Michigan Power is ready to work with you on the safe and reliable interconnection of your electric generating equipment with the Indiana Michigan Power system.

Off-the-shelf portable generators, often used for backup or emergency power, should not be connected to your internal wiring without proper isolation from Indiana Michigan Power network.

However, if you are considering the installation of permanent electric generating equipment (such as a solar or wind generating system), which will be used often and connected to your internal wiring, we can help by reviewing your plans. Following the proper interconnection procedures is important for your safety and for the reliable operation of the Indiana Michigan Power system and your installation. Limits

Renewable facilities eligible for the Net Metering Service Rider NMS must be sized no larger than the customer's average usage and less than 1 MW.

Ownership and Location of Customer-Owned Renewable Facilities

Net Metering Service Rider NMS requires that the customer own the renewable facility that is being installed and the facility must be installed at the premise where the customer is taking service from I&M.

Interconnection Dates

I&Ms Indiana Net Metering Program has a few important dates of which you should be aware.

December 31, 2017 - To be eligible for I&M's Net Metering Rider NMS until July 1, 2047, you must have your net metering facility installed and be participating in Rider NMS by December 31, 2017.

Plan Ahead – It takes time to review and complete required applications, agreements, and inspections prior to December 31, 2017. We recommend that customers seeking to be eligible for I&M's Net Metering Service Rider until July 1, 2047 follow the following guidelines.

Interconnection Application Submitted October 19, 2017
Utility notice of review of Application and approval November 2, 2017
Utility notice of facility review and approval November 28, 2017
Utility notice of inspection of site and agreement sent December 12, 2017
Customer signs and returns agreement December 14, 2017
Installation Complete December 31, 2017

July 1, 2022 - Customers that install a renewable facility after December 31, 2017 and before will be eligible for Rider NMS until July 1, 2032 if all eligibility requirements have been met and there is capacity available under Rider NMS.

After July 1, 2022 - Customers who install a renewable facility after July 1, 2022 and customers who are no longer eligible for Rider NMS will be able to sell excess generation from their renewable facility to I&M at a rate to be approved by the IURC.
