The IM Green program offers two simple on-bill tariff options for residential customers in Indiana to support renewable energy.

Your participation includes a subscription to renewable energy certificates (RECs) that represent the environmental and renewable energy attributes of power provided to the grid.

The IM Green Local Renewable Program includes RECs from I&M's solar and hydro generation assets and wind procurement.

Indiana IM Green at Home FAQs

Currently, more than 85% of the energy I&M generates comes from emission-free sources, including five solar plants; three Hoosier wind generation plants; six hydro-electric plants; and Cook Nuclear Plant. I&M and our parent company, American Electric Power, aim to achieve net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. In the meantime, I&M intends to grow our renewable generation portfolio to more than 50% by 2030.

The IM Green program in Indiana offers two simple on-bill tariff options for residential customers in Indiana to support renewable energy. These options allow you to subscribe to renewable energy certificates (RECs) from solar, wind, hydro and biomass generation across various power markets.

We offer a Local Renewable Program option and a National Renewable Program option, and RECs from both options represent the environmental and renewable energy attributes of the power provided to the grid to directly lower your carbon footprint.

IM Green is a simple, easy and cost-effective way to connect with your friends, family and neighbors on your commitment to sustainability and renewable energy, especially for customers where installing solar panels or wind turbines on your own property may not be feasible or cost-effective.

The IM Green Local Renewable Program option includes RECs from renewable energy generation at I&M's company owned-and-operated solar and hydro generation plants in Indiana, and Michigan, respectively, and from wind power we purchase from three Indiana wind generation plants.

The IM Green Local Renewable Option provides a unique opportunity to connect with and support renewable energy generated locally where our customers live and work.

The IM Green National Renewable Program option includes RECs from nationally-available renewable resources across various power markets.

IM Green is a voluntary program, and if you choose to participate, the option you select and level of participation is your choice. Participation in either option can be from 10 percent to 100 percent of your monthly kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy use, in increments of 10 percent, for a minimum 12-month commitment.

Your support for renewable energy is based on the option you select and your level of participation will be billed monthly on a per kWh basis as an additional line item on your bill. I&M then manages the administrative REC chain-of-custody activities annually on your behalf to lower your carbon footprint.

Based on I&M's current state-approved tariff, the RECs you support under the Local Renewable Option in Indiana in 2021 currently cost $0.0095/kWh.

The table below shows costs for IM Green Local Renewable Options based on a typical household energy use of 1,000 kWh per month across a range of participation options.

Percentage of Home Energy Use Monthly Local Option Cost (Based on 1,000 KWh Monthly Energy Use)

The table below shows costs for IM Green National Renewable Options support based on a typical household energy use of 1,000 kWh per month across a range of participation options.

The IM Green Local Renewable Option provides a unique opportunity to connect with and support renewable energy generated locally where our customers live and work at a slight cost premium. The IM Green National Renewable Program option provides a lower cost option for customers where the location of the renewable energy resource may not be as important a factor.

The current IM Green program price for the Local Renewable Option is more than 80 percent less than the previous program. In addition, the new National Renewable Option brings an even more favorable cost option for nationally-available renewable energy resources.

Beyond demonstrating your personal commitment to sustainability and renewable energy, the net proceeds from your REC support helps I&M reduce costs for all customers under our Fuel Cost Adjustment Rider criteria. Also, your support for renewable energy under either program option directly lowers your personal carbon footprint.

No. Due to the nature of power grids, even under the Local Renewable Option, it is impossible to track which electrons used at your home were generated by any one particular renewable energy generation plant. This is why RECs were created. RECs from your support legally represent the environmental and renewable energy attributes of each kWh of renewable power provided to local power grids.
