Senior Citizen Discount - Michigan

The Senior Citizen Discount is designed for Michigan customers, age 65 or older, who use less than 900 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy each month. Customers qualifying for this program will receive a 50% discount on their monthly service charge, as well as a reduced rate on their energy use under 900 kWh. The cost breakdown (per kWh) of energy use for customers on this program is outlined below.

Customers consistently using more than 900 kWh of energy each month should explore other payment assistance options or payment plans. The Current Bill Summary section on the first page of your monthly bill will include your total energy use in kWh and charges for the current billing cycle.

This information, along with your Usage History (kWh), is also listed on your I&M account.

For months where energy use is over 900 kWh, customers will be billed at a higher rate for anything over the 900 kWh usage amount. Please see the chart below with the cost breakdown for energy use over 900 kWh.

Even though you may use over 900 kWh for a couple months during the year, the Senior Citizen Discount may still benefit you over a 12-month period. Our Customer Services team can walk you through what payment assistance option or payment plan is the best option for you.

A kilowatt-hour measures the amount of electricity a device uses when in power. A kilowatt of energy used by the device for one hour equals one kilowatt-hour. Read more about kilowatt-hours.

The time-of-day (TOD) and senior discount programs represent two different rates, and do not allow for customers to be enrolled in both at the same time.

Customers can be enrolled in the net metering and senior discount rate at the same time.

Yes, customers enrolled in the Senior Citizen Discount may also enroll in the Average Monthly Payment (AMP) plan. Our AMP plan spreads the costs over the entire year, so you pay about the same amount each month. Log into your I&M account or call 800-311-6424 to enroll in the AMP plan.

Only one residential account can be enrolled in the Senior Citizen Discount. We recommend you enroll the account with the highest usage that is under the 900 kWh threshold.

No, this discount is for your primary residence only.

Yes, late fees can still be accessed.
