Indiana Michigan Power employees, contractors and colleagues from other power companies worked diligently and determinedly throughout the day Tuesday to safely restore power to more than two-thirds of the more than 51,000 customers across I&M’s service territory who lost service in Monday evening’s derecho.
Crews encountered significant damage to I&M equipment, caused mostly by trees, branches and limbs. Damage was particularly heavy in the Benton Harbor area, where winds of 66 mph were higher than other areas served by I&M.
In all, crews have thus far identified 84 broken poles, 20 of them in the Benton Harbor area.
I&M will continue efforts to turn the lights back on for all of our customers with more than 900 energy restoration professionals working to restore power.
