Powering Through Parenthood: Cameron Wims

December 18, 2023

Cameron Wims has been with I&M for almost 18 years and counting. During that time, Wims became a husband and a father. He uses the same lessons he leads fellow employees with to lead his sons – be safe, do your best, ask questions and lead by example.

How long have you been at I&M/AEP and in what roles?

I’ve been with the company for nearly 18 years. A majority of my tenure has been spent with Meter Revenue Operations (MRO) as an engineering technologist, MRO supervisor and now as MRO manager. I also learned valuable skills as a Customer Design supervisor and Manager Distribution System for the Fort Wayne district.

Tell us about your family!

My family consists of my beautiful wife Shenekia -- we have been married 18 years. Along with being a wonderful mother she is a minister. We have two handsome sons. Keldin, is a 14-year-old high school freshman who loves to play sports, and Kylin is an 8-year-old third grader that loves to play soccer.

How as I&M/AEP helped you through parenting?

I feel I’m fully equipped with the tools allowing me to show my sons that although it may not seem like hard work pays off -- it will. I encourage them to do their best, ask questions when you don’t know or understand something and to always lead by example even when no one is watching.

What safety or leadership lessons have you learned at I&M that you share with your family?

The biggest lesson I can share with not only my family but everyone is safety. I always tell my wife, my kids and other family members that downed power lines should never be touched and to always assume they are energized. Because of I&M, my family has gained a greater respect and understanding of the dangers associated with electricity. This can be a very dangerous situation if you’re not aware of the proper safety protocols.

Do you have any advice or words of wisdom to fellow caregivers?

Two words comes to mind right away – patience and integrity. When dealing with children and teenagers, patience is key. It takes some time for them to learn the right way on their own. And as far as integrity goes, there is always someone watching what you do, but may not always hear what you say. That goes for raising children and here on the job.

What is your favorite family activity?

I love having family night. We do things such as play Uno, Connect Four, watch movies or go on an outing.
