Home Energy Checkup Provides Healthy Home for Income-Qualified Customers

September 13, 2023

Cooler weather will be here sooner than we think. The time to prepare your home is now, but often, some major concerns go undetected by homeowners. Poorly sealed windows and thinning insulation can increase your energy bill. For comfort at home, and on your wallet, a free Home Energy Checkup from Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) can identify ways to save for income-qualified customers.

During a checkup, homeowners will walk through their home with an I&M energy expert to identify any existing concerns. Once the checkup is complete, homeowners are provided a report of energy-saving opportunities specific to their home.

For immediate savings, homeowners will receive a free kit with energy-saving products (valued at $75). Products in the kit are installed during the appointment and include an advanced power strip, high-efficiency showerheads, LED bulbs and more.

To qualify for a free checkup:

  • Homeowner must be an I&M residential customer living in or renting a single family or duplex home.
  • Home must utilize electric heat.
  • Must meet household income levels of 200% of federal poverty levels or below based on federal income guidelines published in Department of Energy Weatherization Program.

Some homeowners participating in a Home Energy Checkup may qualify for I&M to cover the full cost (up to $4,000) of weatherproofing for their home.

For more information and to schedule a Home Energy Checkup, visit our website or call (833) 566-0583. Checkups are limited to one every three years, per address.

I&M recognizes that financial hardships happen, and sometimes our customers need a little extra support paying their bill.  Through assistance programs in Indiana and Michigan, along with payment arrangements, we can help you keep your bill manageable. We also work with several organizations that can help find local and federal assistance. Call 211 or visit 211.org for more information about utility, housing, healthcare and other types of assistance available.
