IM SolarSM FAQs

Why IM Solar?

IM Solar makes it easy for Hoosiers to support solar energy. For less than $1 a month, you can help our nation reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and move toward energy freedom. By enrolling in IM Solar you can support the environment and help advance the use of solar power without the expense of installing solar panels at your home and business.

What is IM Solar?

IM Solar is a voluntary renewable energy program that provides eligible Indiana residential and business customers the opportunity to support solar power that is 100 percent generated in Indiana and Michigan.

Indiana customers can subscribe to IM Solar for 93 cents per month for each block of 50 kilowatt hours (kWh).

Your enrollment demonstrates there is a market for clean, renewable energy.

How many blocks should I subscribe to?

That is completely your decision. You can subscribe to as many blocks of solar energy as you feel appropriate, and subscriptions will be automatically included on your bill.

You can subscribe to as little as one block for 93 cents per month. Based on a typical household’s use of 1,000 kWh per month, you could subscribe to 20 blocks – enough solar to represent your entire electric household use.

This table, based on a typical household using 1,000 kWh per month, shows other examples:

1 5% 93 cents
2 10% $1.86
5 25% $4.65
10 50% $9.30
20 100% $18.60
40 200% $37.20

All customers who subscribe will receive a window cling you can display to show your support for solar power.

Can anyone subscribe?

IM Solar is available to residential, commercial and industrial customers in Indiana – including municipalities, governmental organizations, school districts and educational institutions. To be eligible for IM Solar, you must be a customer in good standing. (Customers may not have had two or more disconnect notices in the past 12 months or be on an assistance plan.)

How long will my subscription last?

Indefinitely. You may withdraw from the program by notifying us at least 30 days before your scheduled meter reading date.

Why is I&M offering a voluntary renewable energy product?

Like many of our customers, I&M believes renewable energy will continue to play an important role in the future of our industry. We are also pleased to offer choices to our customers whenever possible, and IM Solar is a perfect way for customers to opt in to alternative fuels.

Where does the solar energy come from?

Indiana Michigan Power’s four solar generation plants produce up to 14.7 megawatts of electricity – equivalent to powering more than 2,000 typical homes for a year.

Three of the solar plants are in Indiana (Marion, Mishawaka and New Carlisle), and the fourth is in Watervliet, Mich.

If I sign up for IM Solar, will my home or business receive electricity generated from renewable energy?

I&M guarantees that your IM Solar dollars will go directly toward supporting solar generation. Due to the nature of the power grid, it is impossible to say whether the electrons that enter your home are produced by solar, wind, hydro, nuclear or other sources of generation. Your subscription to IM Solar ensures those dollars are being spent on renewable, solar power.

Will subscribing to IM Solar reduce my bill?

No. An additional line item for the cost of the subscription will be added to your bill.

A Solar Power Rider will be on the bills of I&M’s Indiana customers for the solar projects. Revenue from the IM Solar program will offset the total cost of the solar program, reducing the price of the Solar Power Rider.

Where exactly will my 93 cents per block go?

IM Solar subscriptions will go directly toward the costs of the solar farms and will retire an equivalent level of solar Renewable Energy Certificates connected to the solar generation farms.

For a better understanding of how the certificates work, watch this video from the Environmental Protection Agency.

How do I sign up?
