5 Tips for Buying a Cordless Electric Lawnmower
If you want to mow your lawn without making noise, spilling gasoline everywhere when you refuel or having to replace parts often, a cordless electric lawnmower could be the perfect fit for you. Check out the specifications and features you should keep in mind as you shop to pick the best model for your yard.
1. Battery type
Cordless electric mowers use either lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries that can range from 36 to 120 volts. Lithium-ion batteries are the most common, because they can generally store more energy and remain charged longer. Lead-acid batteries are heavier and can reduce in capacity over time if they are fully discharged. Multiply battery voltage times the amp-hour (Ah) capacity rating to compare run times.
2. Cutting width
Average electrical mowers range from 15 to 22 inches of grass-cutting width, or swath. A wider width will allow you to save time and mow your entire lawn in fewer passes, but it may also cause the battery to work harder. Consider the size of your lawn when choosing the right width for you.
3. Push vs. self-propelled
Self-propelled cordless mowers use powered rear wheels to drive the mower forward or backward, saving you energy as you direct it around your lawn. However, this extra convenience comes at an increased cost. But if you don't mind expending extra energy to push your mower, you can save money with push-style cordless models.
4. Price
High-end models made for larger landscapes can go for a few thousand dollars, but the average price for cordless electric mowers ranges from $150 to $800. Paying more can get you additional capabilities like a second battery or faster charging equipment, but those on the lower end of the price range can get the job done efficiently and effectively.
5. Extra features
The type of blades, number of batteries, discharge and mulching capabilities, height-of-cut adjustments and other features like headlights, adjustable handles, and color could make a model the right or wrong mower for you. Research these options before shopping so you know exactly what to look for when you search.
Don't forget to look for the ENERGY STAR® label as you shop. Cordless electric mowers that use ENERGY STAR-certified battery chargers use about 30% less energy than regular models.
