FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) representatives today proposed a route for an electric transmission line in northeastern Indiana as part of the Western Fort Wayne Area Improvements Project.
Company representatives determined the route after reviewing input from landowners and community members following I&M’s project announcement in February and public open houses in March.
The estimated $77 million investment in Allen and Whitley counties involves:
- Building about 14 miles of new 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission line
- Upgrading approximately 11 miles of 34.5-kV transmission line to 69-kV standards
- Upgrading several area substations
- Building the new Snapper Substation in southern Churubusco

Contract Land Staff, I&M’s right-of-way representative for this project, plans to communicate with directly-involved landowners to discuss preliminary field work and property easements to ensure the safe construction, operation and maintenance of the power line.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), I&M and its contractors are limiting in-person visits with property owners during this process to ensure the safety and health of the public and company representatives.
The company expects to begin construction in spring 2021 and conclude by summer 2022.
