We have all witnessed a beautiful sunny afternoon quickly transition into a dark, thunderous evening. Weather can change in an instant, and the best time to prepare for a storm is before the first warnings are declared.
As we kick off the summer months - weather challenges, such as high winds, extreme temperatures and dangerous storms - become more prevalent. Our team at Indiana Michigan Power stands ready to safely and quickly restore power for the communities we serve; however, individuals can also do their part in preparing for weather.
Identify your place to shelter before a storm hits.
Seeking the appropriate shelter during a storm is incredibly important. Options such as a storm shelter or basement are the safest options but when not available, find a small, windowless, interior room, such as a closet or bathroom.
Prepare a “disaster supplies” kit for your shelter.
Once you have identified your shelter space, create a basic kit that includes first aid materials, radio, flashlight with extra batteries, non-perishable food, bottled water, sturdy shoes and instructions for how to shut off your home’s utilities. Look to add other items as they relate to you and your family’s needs, such as diapers and essential medications.
Always remain on alert for changing weather conditions.
Weather such as hail, thunderstorms and tornados can move in quickly, seemingly “popping up” with little warning. No matter if you are at work, home or outdoors, watch for changing conditions and monitor the forecast and radar for the area you are in. It is ideal to also have a plan in place if the weather does suddenly change.
If severe weather does strike your community, snapping poles and toppling trees on lines, stay back and let crews survey the damage and begin restoration efforts. Never touch or go near a downed line or anything it could be touching, such as fallen limbs, debris and fencing. Provide abundant room for restoration crews and emergency personnel to work as we strive to keep our team and community safe.
