Tricks, Treats and Safety Make for a Great Halloween

October 29, 2024

It’s time to stock up on sweet treats and prepare our homes for the ghosts, superheroes and princesses who will descend on our neighborhoods. It’s important to keep everyone safe during Halloween festivities.

Electrical Hazards:

  • Inspect each string of holiday lights for broken sockets, frayed cords or faulty plugs. Avoid using nails or staples to hang lights or extensions cords.
  • Keep electrical cords out of high-traffic areas, including doorways, walkways and sidewalks, to minimize tripping hazards.
  • Read the labels on extension cords to ensure the cord can handle the load. Remember, extension cords are for temporary use only.
  • Unplug lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving your home.

Trick or Treating Safety:

  • Teach children how to safely cross streets. Children and adults should look both ways and cross only at corners and crosswalks.
  • Brighten your child up. Give them flashlights, glow sticks or use reflective tape on costumes to make their costumes visible to drivers.
  • Choose a costume and accessories made from flame-resistant materials. Also, stay away from long trailing fabric to prevent tripping. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough to see out.
  • Caution children to never enter a home or a car for a treat. Notify law enforcement if you notice suspicious activity.
  • Be alert while driving between 4:00 p.m. and 8 p.m., when most children are trick-or-treating.Watch for children darting into the street.
