Brighter Solutions Add Up to Savings for Customers this Winter

December 7, 2023

Changing the type of light bulb used at home can be a simple way to make a significant impact on your energy bill. For those up against financial hardship, purchasing these bulbs might be difficult. We are dedicated to providing brighter solutions for our customers, especially as winter approaches.

For the third year, I&M has worked with food banks in Southwest Michigan to distribute thousands of LED bulbs. New this year, the addition of door and window insulation materials to keep the cold out this winter. In total, the company donated more than 8,000 four-packs of LED bulbs, 10,000 three-packs of window insulation kits and over 10,000 door and window weatherstripping.

LED bulbs use 90% less energy than traditional light bulbs and last up to 25 times longer. Replacing just one traditional bulb with an LED option can equate to a savings of $14 a year or more. The 48,384 total bulbs donated means an overall savings of over $677,000 annually for our Michigan customers.

Up to 25% of energy used to heat homes escapes through improper sealing. This is especially noticeable around doors and windows. With the weatherstripping and window insulation kits, customers can prevent intruding air flow. This will prevent raising the thermostat setting in the house and ensure comfort by keeping the warm air in. It can also lessen the unsafe use of space heaters to heat rooms within a home.

Starting in 2020, I&M donated more than 8,000 LED four-packs to customers. This was followed up by another donation in late 2021 as many were still facing financial impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic.
