Heat Was No Match for Volunteers Assisting Community in Day of Caring

August 28, 2023

Working to better our communities is something our team strives to do, which is why we are honored to assist local organizations.

For 31 years, volunteers from around Fort Wayne have participated in the United Way of Allen County’s Day of Caring. Last Wednesday’s heat and humidity didn’t keep our team of over 70 volunteers from completing service projects throughout the community. For the first time, this year, our volunteers were split into two groups with one assisting a local food pantry and the other completing a project at a downtown park.

Our team of volunteers filled the Community Harvest’s north location to help prepare and package over 2100 future meals for patients at Fort Wayne’s VA Hospital. This group also helped to label and package materials for an upcoming event benefitting Out of a Jam, a local organization focused on building a foundation in the workforce for women and teens through culinary arts. I&M’s second group braved the heat at Headwaters Park, assisting Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation with landscaping and pruning greenery along the Saint Mary’s River.

In total, over 1,500 volunteers dedicated their time to assisting the community through 63 different projects throughout the Fort Wayne area. The work completed Wednesday benefited local nonprofit agencies, organizations, schools and private residences recommended by NeighborLink.
