I&M Employee Pursues Educational Dream

August 16, 2023

American Electric Power (AEP) and Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) depend on talented employees who are curious, innovative and thrive in a culture in which they feel supported and appreciated. That's why AEP and I&M invests in our employees' development and growth. AEP has an Educational Assistance Program (EAP) for employees to help achieve degrees and certifications.

“Deciding to use AEP’s Educational Assistance Program (EAP) to finish my education, is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life,” said Josh Scheibelhut, coordinator senior in I&M’s Grid Modernization department. “I sincerely hope my story inspires others to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.”

Josh Scheibelhut used AEP's Educational Assistance Program to earn his Bachelor's degree in 2018.

Scheibelhut is heading back to class this fall to pursue a Master’s degree in Business Administration, taking full advantage of the Educational Assistance Program (EAP) for the second time.

Scheibelhut joined I&M in 2016 as a Safety and Health Coordinator for the South Bend and Elkhart District.  In 2018, he used the EAP to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Now, Scheibelhut is putting his talents and degree to work for I&M’s Grid Modernization department.

"Returning to the classroom helped me put all the pieces together so that I could see the big picture,” Scheibelhut said. “By combining education with my real-world experience, I now feel more confident regarding my communication, business acumen and ability to navigate complex situations in my every day work.”

Scheibelhut’s college journey started in 1997, when he was 18. He switched schools twice and majors three times, eventually dropping out of college. After learning about the EAP, he took charge and finished his education journey after 20 years.

“When I look at my degree, I feel such a rush of pride and overwhelming gratitude for AEP and I&M,” Scheibelhut said. “If you’re on the fence about furthering your education, just do it. You’ll have to make some sacrifices and adjustments, but you’ll forget all of that once you walk across the stage and secure your diploma.”

AEP works with Michigan-based Edcor Data Services for the EAP program. If you're interested in learning about career opportunities at AEP or I&M click here.
