Summer vacation is not quite over, but for a group of local youth, it was “back to school” Tuesday afternoon. This session, however, did not feature a typical classroom, but instead, it surrounded students with elements of nature.
Located off Cedar Canyon Elementary School, the American Electric Power Foundation Nature Explore Classroom is designed to provide youth with positive experiences through outdoor-learning opportunities. This innovative class space serves as a year-round site for programming and field trips.
Tuesday’s session brought students from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Northeast Indiana to explore various centers in the nature classroom, such as music, art and building stations. Several attendees also took advantage of special tools as they searched for unique plants and insects.
In 2011, the AEP Foundation partnered with Trees Indiana to support the design and construction of the outdoor classroom. The space features natural materials that provide an opportunity for youth to experience new surroundings and activities that can impact their daily lives.
