One day. More than 1,300 volunteers. Countless community impacts.
Indiana Michigan Power took part in the 35th annual United Way of Allen County Day of Caring, improving spaces that help local churches, nonprofits and families thrive.
Before heading out for a day of service, volunteers gathered at Parkview Field for the event's kickoff ceremony, where United Way of Allen County recognized I&M with its Outstanding Large Organization Award.
“It takes a community to make this happen," said Brandi Buck, executive director of United Way of Allen County. "Indiana Michigan Power has been huge for us over the years.”
This year’s event brought the I&M team to Vincent Village, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families experiencing homelessness.
Employees spent the day planting shade trees, refreshing mulch beds and adding perennial bulbs and flowers throughout the property.
“This particular Day of Caring has been really, really important and impactful to us because it’s all about beautification and taking care of the homes that we have in our village,” said Rohli Booker, director of mission advancement at Vincent Village.
For many I&M employees, the most meaningful part of the day was seeing the direct impact of their work.
“You know your time spent out here is worth it when you see the looks on the people’s faces as we make a difference and they get to enjoy something nice. It really makes a difference in their lives,” said David Myers, I&M’s vice president of safety and emergency management.
By the end of the day, the trees were planted and the flower beds refreshed. Most importantly, volunteers helped create a more welcoming environment for the families Vincent Village serves every day, a reminder that a few hours spent helping others can leave a lasting impact.
