Michigan GoGreen at Home Frequently Asked Questions

In 2023, we generated more than 87% of our energy from emission-free sources, including solar, wind, hydro and the Cook Nuclear Plant, and our energy efficiency programs help reduce customers’ energy use, which also lowers demand for generation of electricity. I&M and our parent company, American Electric Power, aim to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2045.

GoGreen Local is a voluntary renewable energy program that provides Michigan customers the opportunity to support wind, solar and hydro energy resources at a level beyond the renewable energy you already receive from I&M's generation fleet.

GoGreen includes a simple, on-bill tariff option to support renewable energy certificates (RECs) from energy produced by I&M's existing or contracted renewable resources.

GoGreen is a simple, easy and cost-effective way to connect with your friends, family and neighbors on your commitment to sustainability and renewable energy, especially for customers where installing solar panels or wind turbines on your own property may not be feasible or cost-effective.

GoGreen is a voluntary, and if you choose to participate, the level of participation is your choice. Participation can be from 10 percent to 100 percent of your monthly kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy use, in increments of 10 percent.

Your support for RECs is based on your level of participation will be billed monthly on a per kWh basis as an additional line item on your bill. I&M then manages the administrative REC ownership documentation activities annually on your behalf.

Based on I&M's current state-approved tariff, the RECs you support in Michigan will cost $0.00377/kWh. This rate, while not shown on your monthly bill, is the difference between the GoGreen Local Surcharge rate of $0.01906/kWh less the GoGreen Local credit rate of $0.01529/kWh. This will appear on your monthly bill as two lines items.

The table below shows the monthly cost for GoGreen Local participation based on a typical household energy use of 1,000 kWh per month across a range of participation options.

Percentage of Home Energy Use
Energy Use Subscribed to GoGreen Local
Monthly GoGreen Local Cost
10%$0.38
20%$0.75
30%$1.13
40%$1.51
50%$1.89
60%$2.26
70%$2.64
80%$3.02
90%$3.39
100%$3.77

The RECs in the GoGreen Local program come from I&M’s existing solar, wind, or hydro renewable generation resources.

Beyond demonstrating your personal commitment to sustainability and renewable energy, the net proceeds of administrative fees, will be used to offset the costs of the Power Supply Cost Recovery Rider from your participation helps I&M reduce renewable energy surcharge costs for all Michigan customers. Also, your support for the RECs directly lowers your personal carbon footprint.

No. Due to the nature of the power grid, it is impossible to track which electrons used at your home were generated by any one particular renewable energy generation plant. This is why RECs were created and your RECs legally represent the environmental and renewable energy attributes of each kWh of renewable power we provided to the grid.
