IM Green at Home in Michigan

With newly lowered costs, you can voluntarily support green energy for less than 1 cent per kilowatt hour per month. If you are a typical residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month, you can attribute:

  • 10 percent of your energy use to renewable green energy for just 63 cents per month.
  • Half of your energy use for just $3.18 per month.
  • 100 percent of your energy use for just $6.35 per month.

If you’re a residential customer who uses 1,000 kWh and attributes 50% or more of your use to IM Green renewables, you will no longer pay the $3 per month Renewable Energy Surcharge. So, your net cost for 50% would be just 18 cents per month!

Michigan IM Green FAQs

More than two-thirds of the energy I&M generates comes from emission-free sources, including four solar plants (with a fifth under construction); three Hoosier wind generation plants; six hydro-electric plants; and Cook Nuclear Plant, which generates enough emission-free energy to power more than 1.5 million homes. IM Green offers customers an opportunity to support emission-free energy.

IM Green is a voluntary renewable energy program that provides eligible Hoosier customers the opportunity to support wind and solar energy at a level beyond the renewable energy all customers receive from I&M’s generation fleet. Energy included in IM Green is 100% generated in Indiana and Michigan.

IM Green makes it easy for Michigan customers to support renewable energy. For less than $1 per month, you can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support green energy. By enrolling in IM Green, you can support the environment and help advance the use of solar and wind power without installing solar panels or wind turbines.

Michigan customers can participate by attributing as little as 10 percent of their monthly energy use to renewable, green energy. At less than 1 cent per kilowatt hour, a typical residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours per month can attribute 10 percent of their energy use to renewables for just 63 cents, or $6.30 per month to attribute 100 percent of their use.

Supporting green energy is even more affordable of you attribute 50% or more of your use to IM Green. The current Renewable Energy Surcharge of $3 for residential customers is waived when you participate in IM Green at 50% or above. So for the 1,000 kWh customer, the net cost of attributing 50% of your energy use to renewable green energy is just 15 cents per month! Or, you can attribute 100% for a net of just $3.15!

This is a voluntary program, and if you choose to participate, the level of participation is your choice. Participation can be from 10 percent to 100 percent or more of your monthly energy use. Participation levels are in increments of 10 percent.

This table, based on a typical household using 1,000 kilowatt hours of energy per month, shows examples. Your net cost is even lower after the $3 Renewable Energy Surcharge (RES) is waived for participating at 50% or above:

Percentage of household use Monthly Cost Monthly Cost After RES is Waived
10% 63 cents
20% $1.26
30% $1.89
50% $3.15 15 cents
70% $4.41 $1.41
100% $6.30 $3.30

I&M is pleased to offer choices to our customers, and this program gives our Hoosier customers the opportunity to opt-in to renewable wind and solar energy.

The cost is based on your monthly kilowatt hours of energy use, multiplied by the percentage participation level you choose 3 and multiplied again by 0.63 of 1 cent ($0.0063) per kilowatt hour (kWh).

For example:

Average energy use: 1,000 kWh

Level of participation: 50 percent (.50)

1,000 x .50 = 500

500 x .0063 = $3.15

Subtract Renewable Energy Surcharge: $3.15 - $3.00 = $0.15

The energy attributed to your use is generated at I&M’s four company owned-and-operated solar generation plants in the two states we serve and from three Indiana wind generation plants. I&M is also building a new solar plant near South Bend.

Your participation will directly support solar and wind energy. Due to the nature of the power grid, it is impossible to say exactly which electrons entering your home were generated by wind; solar; the Cook nuclear plant in Bridgman; or from I&M’s only coal-fueled plant in southern Indiana. But the dollars from your subscription to IM Green will go directly to supporting renewable wind and solar energy.

No. An additional line item will be placed on your bill to recover the optional payments.

Yes, significantly. The new and improved IM Green program is more than 80 percent less than the previous program.

All money received, minus program costs, will go toward the costs of generating solar and wind energy.
