Let I&M’s Renewable Energy Programs Help Guide your 2023 Energy Goals

February 2, 2023

We are committed to creating a cleaner and brighter future for our customers and communities. We know that a new year can mean new resolutions to be more energy efficient than the year before.

“Indiana Michigan Power knows that our customers take their energy usage very seriously and with the new year, there has never been a better time to look at ways of reducing usage and saving a little money in the process,” said Heather Riggle, Energy Efficiency Accounts Manager with I&M. “We have a strong commitment to the environment and want to help our customers reach their own energy saving resolutions this year.”

We are doing our part too. Environmental responsibility continues to be a priority for us as we work hard to protect our environment while delivering safe, reliable service. We have set goals to grow our renewable generation portfolio by 1,700 MWs by 2030, and our parent company, American Electric Power, aims to achieve net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

Reduce your Energy Usage

One way to help everyone become a little greener is by saving energy. Customers just like you have helped save billions of kilowatt-hours through simple and easy energy efficiency programs.

We offer rebate programs to help make your home or business more energy efficient. Rebates are offered for some HVAC systems, water heaters, pool pumps, smart thermostats, dehumidifiers and more. All these appliances can make a big difference in your overall energy use. For more information on energy-saving programs and rebates, visit ElectricIdeas.com

We also have 100’s of energy-saving tips for your home or work. Some are as simple as cleaning, fixing and inspecting energy equipment. It may not seem like swapping in an LED bulb or fixing a leaky faucet will do much to reduce your energy use or protect the environment, but if every household did just a few of the tips below, we would reduce energy consumption significantly for 2023:

6 Easy Ways to Reduce Energy Usage for Work or Home:

  • Set thermostat at the lowest comfortable setting. A customer can reduce heating costs 2-3% for each degree of adjustment. Changing the temperature from 72°F to 68°F could lower an energy bill by up to 10%.
  • Change or clean the furnace filter once a month. Dust and dirt can quickly clog vital parts, making the furnace run harder and eventually break down.
  • Have the heating system inspected regularly. A $50-$100 annual tune-up can help reduce heating costs by up to 5%.
  • Switch to LED bulbs. LEDs use 90% less energy than typical incandescent bulbs and last 25 times longer. Replacing just five bulbs can save $75 a year.
  • Light what’s needed. Businesses can install “occupant sensors” to automatically turn lights off and on, as well as only lighting an area when daylight is insufficient.
  • Stop Energy Waste. At work, Activate sleep settings on all printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, and multifunction devices so they automatically enter a low-powered sleep mode when inactive.
