Sometimes, making a difference starts with a trail that becomes safer to use. Sometimes it's a conversation that inspires a young person to see new possibilities. And sometimes it's a handwritten note that reminds a child they are seen, valued and cared for.
During AEP's Week of Service, I&M employees showed up for the communities we serve in ways that went beyond providing power.
Across Indiana and Michigan, employees spent time with neighbors, supported local nonprofits and pitched in on projects that help make our communities stronger. From mentoring youth and supporting veterans to improving outdoor spaces and lending a hand to local organizations, employees volunteered their time and talents to help improve quality of life where our customers live, work and raise their families.
"Some of the most meaningful impacts aren't measured in dollars or hours. They're found in the conversations, connections and acts of kindness that happen when people come together to serve others," said Annie Smith, external affairs manager for the Greater South Bend, Elkhart and Southwest Michigan area. "Week of Service gave our employees an opportunity to make a difference in big and small ways. Those efforts will continue to ripple through our communities long after the week has ended."
Volunteers connected with young men and fathers through Present Pillars in Benton Harbor, spent time with campers at Hannah & Friends in South Bend, improved trails along the Cardinal Greenway in Marion and supported community programs through organizations such as Junior Achievement and Five Star Life.
Others took part in simple but powerful acts of kindness, including writing notes of encouragement for children receiving beds through Mustard Seed Furniture Bank. Those messages may only take a few minutes to write, but their impact can last much longer.
"A bed is more than a place to sleep. It's a place where a child can feel safe, rest and dream," said Ashley Savieo, director of Customer Service and Business Development and Mustard Seed Furniture Bank board member. "We're proud to partner with Mustard Seed Furniture Bank to provide beds for local children and we were honored to add notes of encouragement to each one. Together, these small acts of kindness can help children feel supported and help set them up to learn, grow and thrive."
Giving back is one of the ways I&M shows up for the communities we're proud to call home. In 2025, the company provided grants to 137 local organizations across its Indiana and Michigan service territory, while employees contributed more than 4,100 volunteer hours.
