The summer sun that once filled your home is slowly becoming less plentiful, but that shouldn’t leave you in the dark. This transition of seasons may lead to more frequent use of indoor lighting, but finding the right options and devices can lead to lasting energy savings at home. Consider these simple practices to maintain energy efficiency while ensuring you have the light needed for comfort at home.
Use lights only when needed
Consider using light control devices like dimmers, motion detectors or occupy sensors to provide light only when needed. These options can prevent lights from being left on in empty spaces for a prolonged period.
Less light might be a better option
Whether doing homework or putting dishes away, task lighting, such as lamps or under cabinet lights, might be all you need. These are more energy efficient and provide focused illumination on a specific area when overhead lighting is not needed. If using this option, make sure whatever the source, it uses an LED bulb.
We know we talk about LED bulbs…
Make the switch to LED bulbs throughout your home. These bulbs use 90% less energy and last 25 times longer compared to typical incandescent lighting. Replacing just five bulbs can save approximately $75 a year.
Make the most of your light
When home early in the day, open the blinds and curtains, if possible, and let natural sunlight flood your space. To get the most from indoor light sources, plan to occasionally dust bulbs and fixtures. A heavy coating of dust can block up to 50% of light output.
