I&M’s Falcon Family Expands with First Chick

May 5, 2025

The I&M falcon family continues to grow. Just a little over one month after the first egg was laid in the rooftop nest box at the Indiana Michigan Power Center (IMPC), the first fluffy chick has emerged. With this newest addition, now visible on the I&M Falcon Cam, a total of 38 chicks have now hatched to parents Moxie (mother) and Jamie (father) – with possibly more to come.

The first egg in the clutch of three was laid March 18, with the other two following shortly after. Peregrine falcons typically lay between three to five eggs in March and early April, with hatching occurring about 32 days later.

Moxie and Jamie have called IMPC home since 2013, gathering countless fans from around the world during that time. Watching from the I&M Falcon Cam, many have watched countless eggs hatch to reveal fluffy chicks. As the wait for the final two eggs to hatch continues, the growing falcon community will once again be called upon to help vote on a name for each chick. More information will be available on voting as well as when the chicks will be banded at a later date.

Each spring, the young birds receive leg bands to track their eventual migration. This distance can be as great as 200 miles from the site the falcon was released or raised, including Carla (2020) recently identified in Pittsburgh. Historically, falcons have nested on ledges of tall cliffs and river bluffs, but an increased number have been calling urban areas home due to the proximity to food, water and safety.

I&M’s live feed Falcon Cam is the result of a partnership between I&M, Soarin’ Hawk Avian Rescue and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
