Thank you for your patience.
Managers of commercial businesses and multi-unit dwellings are increasingly providing plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) charging stations to take advantage of the convenience and affordability of electric vehicles and to demonstrate their commitment to the environment. I&M has incentive programs to support Level 2 (240V) PEV charging in each of the sectors discussed below.
Existing small-commercial customers who average less than 4,500 kWh per month of electricity are eligible for $500 incentive and a discounted off-peak rate up to a 40% reduction from our standard rate.
To take advantage of this incentive you’ll need a submeter from I&M between your electrical panel and PEV Level 2 (240V) charger and an Indiana-registered employee-owned or company PEV. Public Level 2 PEV chargers not tied to an Indiana-registered PEV are not eligible.
There is no fee to sign up. I&M will provide more information and detailed steps on the process once you apply.
Commercial and industrial and multi-unit dwellings (MUD) customers not eligible for the small commercial business incentive can take advantage of a separate I&M PEV incentive program for Level 2 (240V) PEV charging for employees, fleet and MUD residents. Public Level 2 PEV chargers not tied to an Indiana-registered PEV are not eligible.
Under this program, I&M pays $250 per charging port if you can provide power to eligible Level 2 PEV chargers from behind their own electrical panels.
If a customer needs new electrical service from I&M for Level 2 PEV charging, I&M still can pay the customer $250 per charging port if I&M’s anticipated revenue from the charging meets I&M’s state approved criteria for adding new service without customer investment.
If I&M’s anticipated revenue does not meet our standard state approved criteria, we can extend the timeline to 5-years in lieu of the $250 per port payment to avoid customer investment.
For I&M customers wanting to learn more, please email IMPluggedIn@aep.com with your contact information.
Off-Peak rates available specifically for your Level 2 PEV charging apply from 11pm-6am every day.
No. You can charge your EV any time, same as before. However, you’ll get the benefit of the lower rate only during Off-Peak hours.
No. Customers eligible for this incentive may not operate distributed generation resources or participate in the Company’s Net Metering Service Rider or new Excess Distributed Generation Rider.
You’ll need a submeter base and a submeter. If eligible, the submeter is provided to you free of charge. You are responsible for hiring a licensed electrician to install the Level 2 PEV charger and a submeter base outdoors between your electrical panel and charger. Once you provide local building inspection approval to I&M, we install the submeter.
Commercial and industrial or MUD customers not eligible for the small commercial business incentive can still take advantage of I&M’s per $250 per port or the extended 5-year timeline in lieu of the $250 per port payment to avoid customer investment options under our state-approved pilot program incentive.
Given the continued growth of PEVs, many of our Indiana commercial customers are interested in providing PEV charging options for their employees or want to electrify their company’s fleet but are unsure about how to get started. Other customers have more defined needs for EV charging and are looking for help to deliver a successful PEV charging deployment project that can take advantage of I&M’s incentive program option.
To support the PEV charging needs of our C&I customers, I&M has collaborated with ChargePoint – the market leader in the PEV charging network industry – to bring the best solutions for PEV charging.
ChargePoint provides an integrated PEV charging station hardware solution deployed across an industry-leading, cloud-based software and mobile app platform that makes the PEV charging simple and seamless.
ChargePoint also offers a financing service agreement option called “ChargePoint as a Service” that offers a turnkey design, build, own operate and maintenance option should the availability of capital for PEV charging be a concern.
For I&M customers wanting to learn more about our ChargePoint program, please email IMChargePoint@aep.com with your questions.
The first step is a meeting with I&M to help define your needs and to review I&M’s PEV incentives, new power supply options and ChargePoint’s solutions. I&M then refers interested customers to ChargePoint to develop a proposal to the customer.
Depending on whether the project will be a ChargePoint direct sale or a financed agreement through ChargePoint as a Service, the electrician plays an important role throughout the install process.
For a direct sale, the customer uses their own electrician and ChargePoint will provide equipment procurement, site prep and installation certification requirements to your electrician.
For ChargePoint as a Service, a 5-year service agreement for hardware, software, installation and O&M and repair will be executed by the Customer with ChargePoint. The Customer then retains an electrician for site prep work for the chargers separately.
Before you begin your PEV charger install, I&M will visit your location to determine best power solution to meet your needs. If needed, you will be responsible for ordering new service at 1.888.710.4237.
Under a direct sale, your electrician procures the equipment from local ChargePoint distributor, performs site prep work and installation in accordance with ChargePoint’s installation requirements.
For ChargePoint as a Service, a 5-year service agreement for hardware, software, installation & O&M and repair will be executed by you with ChargePoint. Then you retain an electrician for site prep work for the chargers separately.
ChargePoint’s ChargePoint as a Service option is summarized below:
Under ChargePoint as a Service, the customer does not own the chargers and makes fixed payments over a 5-year service contract agreement.
Depending on your needs and what type of experience you would like your drivers to have, the decision to install a smart charging system, often referred to a “Networked System,” provides a number of advantages including remote charger access control, a customer-friendly smart phone app to improve the charging experience and innovative energy management controls to manage charging rates and costs.
No, you are free to use whatever charging equipment company or electrician you want for your installation under I&M’s incentive programs.
