Michigan Green Power Option FAQs

Why should I consider participating?

The Green Power Option makes it easy for Michigan customers to support renewable energy. For less than $3 per month, you can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support green energy. By enrolling in the Michigan Green Power Option, you can support the environment and help advance the use of solar and wind power without installing solar panels or wind turbines.

What is the Michigan Green Power Option?

It is a voluntary renewable energy program that provides eligible Michigan residential and business customers the opportunity to support wind and solar energy at a level beyond the renewable energy all customers receive from I&M’s generation fleet. Energy included in the Green Power Option is 100% generated in Michigan and Indiana.

Michigan customers can participate by attributing as little as 10 percent of their monthly energy use to renewable, green energy. At just 2.47 cents ($.0247) per kilowatt hour, a typical residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours per month can attribute 10 percent of their energy use to renewables for just $2.47, or just $24.70 per month to attribute 100 percent of their use. (Customers can attribute above 100 percent to support renewable energy.)

Customers who attribute 50 percent or more per month will not pay the $3 per-month Renewable Energy Surcharge.

What percent of my energy use should I subscribe to?

This is a voluntary program, and if you choose to participate, the level of participation is your choice. Participation can be from 10 percent to 100 percent or more of your monthly energy use. Participation levels are in increments of 10 percent.

This table, based on a typical household using 1,000 kilowatt hours of energy per month, shows examples:

10% $2.47
20% $4.94
30% $7.41
50% $12.35
70% $17.29
100% $24.70
200% $49.40
Why is I&M offering this voluntary energy option?

On Dec. 21, 2016, Gov. Rick Snyder signed into law Public Act 362, requiring electric providers to offer a voluntary green pricing program to their customers.

I&M is pleased to offer choices to our customers, and this program gives our Michigan customers the opportunity to opt-in to renewable energy.

How is the cost to me calculated?

The cost is based on your monthly kilowatt hours of energy use, multiplied by the percentage participation level you choose, and multiplied again by 2.47 cents ($0.0247) per kilowatt hour (kWh).

For example:

Average energy use: 1,000 kWh

Level of participation: 50 percent (.50)

1,000 x .50 = 500

500 x .0247=$12.35

What is the enrollment period?

There is a minimum enrollment period of three months. Customers who wish to cancel must provide a 30-day notice.

Where does the energy come from?

The energy attributed to your use is generated at I&M’s four company owned-and-operated solar generation plants in the two states we serve. One is located in Watervliet, Mich.; two are in the South Bend area; one is in Marion, Ind. The energy also is from three Indiana wind generation plants from which I&M buys wind energy.

If I participate in the Michigan Green Power Option, does that mean my home will be powered from electricity directly from solar panels and wind turbines?

Your participation will directly support solar and wind energy. Due to the nature of the power grid, it is impossible to say exactly which electrons entering your home were generated by wind; solar; hydro-electric plants in Michiana; the Cook nuclear plant in Bridgman; or from I&M’s only coal-fueled plant in southern Indiana. But the dollars from your subscription to the Michigan Green Power Option will go directly to supporting renewable wind and solar energy.

Will choosing the Green Power Option reduce my monthly electric bill?

No. An additional line item will be placed on your bill to recover the optional payments.

For customers who choose to attribute 50 percent or more to green power, I&M waives the $3 per month Renewable Energy Surcharge.

Where exactly will my 2.47 cents per kilowatt hour go?

All money received from the program, minus program costs, will be credited to offset costs for renewable energy. All energy purchased through the Green Power Option will go to retiring the Renewable Energy Certificates generated from that energy.
