Serving Customers and Communities

Indiana Michigan Power is more than a company that provides electricity to your home or business. I&M has served parts of Indiana for more than a century. Our employees are your neighbors – you see us at the supermarket, at the ballgame, at the church fundraiser.

I&M serves communities across North-Central, Northeast and East Central Indiana with more than power. I&M cares deeply about our communities, and we have Boundless Energy to be a good corporate citizen that gives back to our communities.

Community

From LaPorte County to Randolph County, from Elwood to Butler. In larger cities like Fort Wayne and South Bend to mid-size cities like Marion and Muncie, to smaller towns like Hartford City and Alexandria: I&M is involved in your community.

I&M employees help mulch around playground equipment for United Way Day of Caring.

I&M and our employees are major contributors to United Way, with employees giving tens of thousands of dollars each year – an amount that grows even higher with I&M’s 50 percent company match. In fact, I&M was recently named winner of the 2017 Spirit of Giving Award, United Way of Allen County’s highest campaign award.

Employees participate in a number of volunteer activities in our communities, helping spruce up non-profits’ offices and grounds, building playgrounds, planting trees, buying holiday gifts for the less fortunate and more.

Here is just a partial listing of I&M’s contributions in recent years:

East Central Indiana:

  • $800,000 AEP Foundation contribution to Marion Ivy Tech for Credits Count, which focuses on expanding awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers allowing students to graduate high school with at least 12 college credits.
  • $300,000 AEP Foundation contribution to Muncie Children’s Museum in support of a new interactive STEM exhibit
  • Contributions to the Muncie YMCA, Grant County Cancer Services, Muncie Civic Theater and many more.

Northeast Indiana:

  • $100,000 AEP Foundation gift to Turnstone
  • $50,000 AEP Foundation gift to United Way of Allen County 2-1-1- services.
  • Contributions to Arts United, Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, Noble County Community Foundation, the Berne Chamber of Commerce and many more.

North Central Indiana:

  • $250,000 AEP Foundation contribution to Ethos Science Center.
  • $25,000 AEP Foundation gift to Beacon Children’s Hospital.
  • Contributions to the Annual Arbor Day Tree Give Away, Elkhart Environmental Center, South Bend Firefighters Burn Camp and many more.

Developing Economies

Hoosiers’ reputations as reliable and talented workers plus reasonable costs of doing business are major attractions for businesses looking to locate, re-locate or grow. I&M’s affordable rates that are below state and national averages are also very important to employers.

But I&M does much more to help the economies of our communities.

For one, I&M is making major investments to improve reliability for businesses and industries that need power 24/7/365.

Government and business officials break ground in Marion for the Café Valley production facility where employees make muffins, bundt cakes, ring cakes, loaf cakes, danishes, turnovers, croissants and more.

We work closely with government and business agencies to deliver information about the opportunities our communities offer. I&M helps communities prepare properties for development and market them to the world. In 2016-2017, I&M contributed more than $300,000 to Indiana economic development organizations in all of the counties we serve.

For example, in 2016 I&M partnered on economic development projects that will result in a total investment of $189 million creating 516 new jobs over the next three years. The projects include expansions of Dana in Fort Wayne, ELSA in Elwood and Fort Recovery Industries in Portland.

I&M also helps gain nationally recognized “shovel ready” certification for sites that allows businesses and developers to know a property is ready for a specific industry. That includes data center ready sites in Muncie and South Bend; food processing sites in Decatur, Kendallville and Muncie; and heavy industrial ready sites in Fort Wayne, Avilla, Gas City and Alexandria.

Empowering Customers

Today’s technologies offer a multitude of ways our customers can become more informed and better manage their energy use.

  • I&M’s new, high-tech IM Home program offers customers the ability to adjust their home temperature using their cell phones and to effortlessly save hundreds of kilowatt hours of energy over the year.
  • Energy savings aren’t limited to your home. I&M offers a number of programs to help customers ranging from small businesses to large factories save energy.
  • I&M’s On the Go Mobile Alerts give customers information about their bill and any outages – including estimated times power will be restored – by text and/or e-mail.
  • I&M’s outage map gives customers more ability to see where outages are occurring and when power is expected to be restored.

Building the Future

I&M's Building the Future plan would give customers even more options you have told us you want.

I&M is proposing to eliminate the third-party billing fee for customers who charge their bill by credit card.

I&M proposes to offer a new Renewable Energy Option that would give you the opportunity to support renewable energy by attributing a percentage of usage to wind and solar power. For example, a typical homeowner who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours of energy each month could attribute 10 percent of your energy use to solar and wind for just an estimated $3.53 per month. Homeowners can choose to show greater support in increments of 10 percent, all the way to 100 percent for an estimated $35.30 per month.

I&M constantly looks for other ways to serve you, our customers and neighbors, in the ways you want to be served.
