MPSC Approves Settlement Agreement

  • The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) has approved the settlement agreement reached between Indiana Michigan Power and parties representing the interests of consumers, environmentalists, businesses and the state of Michigan.
  • The agreement establishes new revenues to support I&M’s Michigan Plan, designed to make significant investments in energy generation, transmission and distribution to strengthen and improve the electric grid, improve reliability and better serve customers.
  • The agreement calls for an overall rate increase of $36.4 million. This amount is 37% less than the overall rate increase first proposed last summer.

Customer Rates

  • New rates will take effect February 1.
  • I&M’s Michigan customers will not see the full effect of the rates until June. From February through May, part of the increase will be credited back to customers and designated on bills as “phase-in credit”.
  • Residential customers who use 1,000 kWh of electricity per month will see their monthly bills rise about $24 to $156.93, about 80 cents per day. Customers using 500 kWh per month would see an increase of about $10 to $82.63.
  • Qualified low-income customers will not be charged the residential service charge of $7.25.
  • Customers ages 65 and older who use relatively low amounts of electricity will see their bill decrease. For example, a senior citizen using 250 kWh would see their bill drop 26 percent, to $22.95. Those using 500 kWh would see a reduction of about 7 percent to $56.05.

Customer Benefits

  • The Michigan Plan:
    • Supports the continued operation of I&M’s Cook Nuclear Plant in Bridgman, which generates enough emission-free energy to power more than 1.5 million homes.
    • Gives I&M flexibility to strategically prioritize investments into its southwest Michigan service territory.
    • Includes numerous infrastructure upgrades such as new poles and wires, and adding technology that makes the electric grid powering southwest Michigan smarter and stronger.
    • Proactively trims trees in a manner that continues to respect the environment while addressing the No. 1 source of outages.
    • Expands incentives for electric-car charging beyond houses to apartment buildings and commercial fleet vehicles. The approved plan opens the door for more publicly accessible charging stations at businesses and along Michigan’s interstates.
    • As part of the MPSC decision, I&M will not file a new base rate review before 2022, and will not change rates until 2023 at the earliest.

Rates will fluctuate before then due to factors such as fuel prices, transmission costs and other tracked expenses.
