Why is a rate review needed?

A rate review is needed to build the future.

This is the first time in six years, and only the third time in the past 25 years, Indiana Michigan Power has asked for a review of its base rates in Indiana.

I&M strives to serve our customers reliably, efficiently and in the most cost-effective ways possible. We constantly evaluate our system based on a balance of overall reliability costs to our customers, and I&M needs to invest more in our system to maintain and enhance reliability.

  • I&M’s Building the Future plan will pro-actively and systematically replace and update aging wires, poles, transformers and other distribution equipment before the end of their life spans.
  • Trees are the No. 1 cause of customer outages. I&M plans to accelerate tree trimming and clearing to achieve a cycle where all trees near power lines are trimmed every four years.

Planning Today for Tomorrow’s Needs

Evolving technology, consumer expectations and the energy industry as a whole are leading to changes in how I&M generates electricity and the choices the company can offer to our customers.

In I&M’s Building the Future plan, we are taking steps today to better serve our customers – both in the coming year and coming decades:

  • As the nation moves more rapidly toward renewables, I&M is Building the Future by transitioning toward a more diverse mix of energy generation with less reliance on coal. I&M proposes to help facilitate that transition by adjusting the depreciation of Unit 1 of its Rockport plant to prepare for its eventual retirement. The sooner depreciation costs are adjusted, the less impact on customers.
  • Our plan also offers customers greater flexibility in supporting the increasing use of renewable energy such as wind and solar.
Your local line mechanics help maintain the 25,000+ line miles of our energy grid. Laid out end-to-end, it would wrap around the world.

As the hometown energy provider in the communities we serve, I&M works constantly to be a good neighbor. Everyone benefits when our communities thrive.

In addition to enhancing reliability and transitioning to the future, our Building the Future Plan strengthens our service and dedication to our customers and communities.

A settlement agreement with groups representing stakeholders shows I&M’s commitment to our communities in several ways. If approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission:

  • I&M will launch the Energy Share Pilot Program, providing $250,000 to the Indiana Community Action Association for a new program to help qualified low-income customers with their winter electric bill.
  • I&M will also provide an additional $150,000 to the Community Action group for home weatherization, which reduces energy use.
  • I&M will also establish the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program that gives residential customers the opportunity to voluntarily contribute to a fund that will help low-income customers with their bills. I&M will launch the fund with $50,000 in seed money.
  • Under another new program, I&M will provide up to $500,000 to help a number of qualified low-income customers catch up on their overdue energy bills.
  • I&M will create the Economic Impact Grant Program to help communities and other organizations finance qualified economic development projects.

The cost of these programs is not included in this proposed customer rate increase.
