Why is a rate review needed?

A rate review is needed to build the future.

This is the first time in six years, and only the third time in the past 25 years, Indiana Michigan Power has asked for a review of its base rates in Indiana.

Reliability

I&M strives to serve our customers reliably, efficiently and in the most cost-effective ways possible. We constantly evaluate our system based on a balance of overall reliability costs to our customers, and I&M needs to invest more in our system to maintain and enhance reliability.

  • I&M’s Building the Future plan will pro-actively and systematically replace and update aging wires, poles, transformers and other distribution equipment before the end of their life spans.
  • Trees are the No. 1 cause of customer outages. I&M plans to accelerate tree trimming and clearing to achieve a cycle where all trees near power lines are trimmed every four years.

Planning Today for Tomorrow’s Needs

Evolving technology, consumer expectations and the energy industry as a whole are leading to changes in how I&M generates electricity and the choices the company can offer to our customers.

In I&M’s Building the Future plan, we are taking steps today to better serve our customers – both in the coming year and coming decades:

  • As the nation moves more rapidly toward renewables, I&M is Building the Future by transitioning toward a more diverse mix of energy generation with less reliance on coal. I&M proposes to help facilitate that transition by adjusting the depreciation of Unit 1 of its Rockport plant to prepare for its eventual retirement. The sooner depreciation costs are adjusted, the less impact on customers.
  • Our plan also offers customers greater flexibility in supporting the increasing use of renewable energy such as wind and solar.
  • Advances in technology increasingly give customers the capability to better measure and control their electric use with advanced new smart meters. These meters also can help identify the precise location of outages much faster. To prepare for the future deployment of new metering technology, I&M proposes to adjust the timing of the retirement of the older metering technology.

I&M uses Flurry Analytics Service (provided by Yahoo) in order to improve its mobile apps. Flurry’s privacy policy governs the use of this information.

Also, I&M reserves the right to share any aggregated information (i.e., non-personally identifiable information) with any third parties for any reason, unless prohibited by law.

We will not sell, rent or otherwise disclose the information we gather about you or your account to any third party, except as outlined in this Privacy Policy.

I&M takes reasonable steps to protect your personally identifiable information as it is transferred to us, through the use of Web technologies such as the Secure Sockets Layer and others. However, no Internet transmission of information is ever completely secure or error-free. In particular, e-mail sent to or from I&M may not be secure.
