Thanksgiving Fire Safety

November 25, 2020

When we think about Thanksgiving, friends and family, delicious meals, vacation time and holiday shopping likely come to mind before "fire safety". However, as more of us prepare to make those holiday treats, fire safety is important to consider.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, every year there are more than 188,000 cooking fires resulting in nearly 200 deaths, nearly 4,000 injuries, and close to $500 million in property loss. On Thanksgiving Day alone, there are an average of 2,400 fires resulting in 5 deaths, 25 injuries and $19 million in property loss.

Remembering a few simple tips, such as keeping combustibles away from the stove and keeping the oven door closed in the case of an oven fire can help keep your home safe. If you're deep frying a turkey, make sure to use the proper amount of oil, completely thaw the turkey, and have a safe, sturdy space for your fryer away from your home and clear of debris.

Thinking ahead and following a few simple guidelines can help you enjoy all those good eats this season without adding to the statistics.

Please have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
