Volunteers can have a significant impact on a local organization, but often overlooked is how that act of service can impact a volunteer. From developing connections to cultivating a passion for community, volunteers hold their own unique reason why they dedicate their time to serving others. For some, like I&M’s Jarrod Wilson, that drive to serve his community is personal.
Can you explain the Dancing with the Arc Stars event and why you are participating?
This event is one of Easterseals Arc of Northeast Indiana’s biggest fundraisers to help support the purpose to lead the way to 100% equity, inclusion and access for people with disabilities, families and communities. Everyone deserves an opportunity to take on their dreams.
My dance partner, Nitaya, is amazing and can take on every day with a purpose because of this organization. Nitaya has been ballroom dancing for years. She has been a Special Olympic athlete in track, basketball and bowling. She enjoys shopping, movies, dancing and spending time with friends. She presently works at MVP Lanes; however, her dream job is to be a greeter at Walmart.
In addition to participating in its event, is there anything else you want to add about Easterseals?
This organization deeply resonates with me. I have a wonderful nephew who has special needs and close friends that utilize and support the programs offered by Easterseals. It is amazing what they do for the community.
What other organizations do you volunteer with?
In addition to Easterseals Arc of Northeast Indiana, I also volunteer with First Fridays Fort Wayne, Fort Wayne Mission, Northeast Base Community Council, Habitat for Humanity, the United Way and Special Olympics.
How long have you done volunteer work?
Between 15 – 20 years.
What drives you to volunteer your time in the community?
Fort Wayne is a great community to raise a family and build a foundation. I want to be part of making where I live a better place. The local non-profits have big hearts, and I love to participate in helping them reach their goals.
In your opinion, why should someone consider volunteering if they have not done so before?
I feel it has numerous benefits that add fullness to your life. It gives you an opportunity to impact something bigger than yourself. It gives you friendship, camaraderie, fulfillment and the joy of helping others within your community.
